Porous carbon having more than 2000 m / g of BET specific surface area was synthesized by defluorination of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) at 473 K using sodium metal. The porous carbon as-prepared had a large amount of narrow mesopores 2-3 nm in pore width, together with micropores. Control of the
