✦ Synopsis

The (3-globin genes from a Thai patient compound heterozygous for p'and Pothalassemias were investigated. Amplification and DNA analysis of genomic DNA by the polymerase chain reaction procedure permitted the identification of the p-Malay mutation (p 19;AAC-AGC) in one allele and a novel pO-thalassemia mutation (41 ;TTC-TT) in another allele.

An initiation codon mutation ATG-ATA of the p-globin gene was found in seven members of three generations of a family living in northern Sweden. This mutation, which has not previously been described, changes the initiation codon for methionine into a codon for isoleucine and will then result in a p

## Abstract We report on three novel polymorphisms in and around the β globin gene. Two of them are intronic (IVS2) polymorphisms (IVS 2 nt 200–203 (−CTTT) and IVS2 82–83 (−AG)). The third is a novel G→C substitution at nt +1707 related to the β globin cap site. This +1707 G→C polymorphism was dete
