β¦ Synopsis
New OCR, formatted, proofed, v1.5. Excellent. Reminds me of John Steinbeck's Monterrey books.
Itβs Prohibition, and Minot, North Dakota, has suddenly run dry. So Hal Brady and his friend George and his brother Barney decide to make a run to Wisconsin for some grain alcohol. On their way back they are pursued by a federal agent, elude him with the aid of a dead man, and then find themselves prime suspects in a bank robbery.
This nostalgic tale of a wild time gets off to a rousing start and continues with the death of a customs officer who had a relaxed attitude to boot-legging. Was his death an accident, or was it murder? Hal is diverted from the serious business of rum-running while he tries to find the answer. The footprints lead to a startling pair of boots, and there is danger all along the trail.
This charming and off-beat novel has several kinds of suspense: Who robbed the bank? Who is the murderer? Will a young man get out of jail in time for his wedding? And will our hero ever pluck up the courage to marry his girl?
