Two trends are emerging that may seriously hamper the progress of scientific medicine. I do not necessarily mean high-technology medicine-merely medicine where intuition and theory are backed by sound evidence. The animal welfare lobby may make it increasingly difficult, if not impossible, to pursue certain types of animal experimentation. At the same time, the issues of clinical experimentation have been exposed to such ill-informed and hostile criticism that, if we are not careful, the Government may be bludgeoned into ill-judged legislation that will frighten both doctors and patients away from participation in clinical trials.Society may not intend to draw a line across the balance sheet of clinical medicine with the cry of "thus far, and no
