Two trends are emerging that may seriously hamper the progress of scientific medicine. I do not necessarily mean high-technology medicine-merely medicine where intuition and theory are backed by sound evidence. The animal welfare lobby may make it increasingly difficult, if not impossible, to pursue certain types of animal experimentation.
