✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Animal research has demonstrated specific, irreversible, structural and functional changes in the lungs of starved rats. The effect of starvation on lung compliance in anorexia nervosa has not been studied. This case‐study and series review offer evidence of similar changes occurring specifically in the lungs of younger patients with very severe anorexia nervosa. They also raise the possibility that the younger the patient, the greater the risk of permanent damage. We conducted a detailed comparison of 13 cases.
