Received in USA 23 July 1970; received in UK for publication 7 August 1970) b/e have discovered an unexpected novel reaction of butadiene with formalde-hyde which occurs under mild conditions (30-80"~) in the presence of catalytic amounts of Pd(P@s)*.

Compounds believed to be isomeric divinyltetrahydropyrans were produced. in good yields (>o5$) and selectivities (358) (eqn. 11, together with traces of higher boilers.
