and NaR* via isolable R* 2 ECl (reaction of GaCl 3 and NaR* leads to R* 2 GaէGaR* instead of R* 2 Ga-GaR* 2 ), (ii) from EBr (E = In, Tl) and NaR* or NaRЈ (reaction of AlBr or GaBr and NaR* leads to R* 4 Al 4 or R* 8 Ga 18 and R* 8 Ga 22 ), (iii) from NaGa 2 R* 3 and Me 3 SiCl. According to X-ray structure analyses, the ditrielanes contain two planar groups R 2 EE which are orthogonal to each other (R = R*; angle REER ca. 90°) or nearly orthogonal (R = RЈ; angle REER ca. 80°). All compounds are deeply colored. The λ max value of the visible absorption shifts with increasing atomic number of E and with the increasing angle between the R 2 EE planes to longer wavelengths (ruby R* 4 Al 2 , deep-violet R* 4 In 2 , dark-green R* 4 Tl 2 ; red-violet RЈ 4 In 2 , dark-blue RЈ 4 Tl 2 ).
