The distribution of substituents in six 0-ethyl-0-(2-hydroxyethyl)celluloses has been investigated by methylation analysis. The samples were prepared under conditions analogous to those used industrially. An analysis of the results, under simplified assumptions, indicates that the distribution of substituents in the greater part of each sample is fairly similar to that expected for a homogeneous reaction. There was, however, a considerable discrepancy between the percentage of (CH,CH,O) residues determined by analysis and the value calculated from the composition of the hydrolysate. The former value was much higher, indicating that glucose ethers with a high degree of hydroxyethylation have been overlooked in the g.1.c. analysis.

Reaction of dialkyl alkylphosphonates with SOCl, in the presence of DMF: reported by Maier, can serve as a convenient route to simple monoalkyl alkylphosphonochloridates, However, when a substrate contains a (2- dia1kylamino)ethyl group as one of the ester functions, the course of the reaction is de
A method is described for the analysis of positions of substitution of O-methyl and O-ethyl groups in commercial samples of O-methylcellulose and O-ethylcellulose, respectively. The method requires perethylation of O-methyl-cellulose and permethylation of O-ethylcellulose. Subsequent reductive cleav
