โœฆ Synopsis

We calculare with molecular dynamics the distribution of free flight times for a system consisting of hard spheres in two and three dimensions In both cases the density is chosen just below the density where a phase transition can be ob served and the flight time distribution is subdivided according to the velocity of the cohiding particle_ In three dimensions this function is found to be qualitatively similar to its low density hmit, but in tv.o dimensions -due to the much iarSer number of collisions -a systematic discrepancy is observed. Nevertheless, in both cases no cage effects are detected_

Using a simple functional relation the distribution of the times of free flight in 2 claskal gas of hard spheres is shown to depend only on two specific combinations of the molecular and th~mo&ynamic parameter. This distribution has been c&u&d with molecular dynamics for three values of the density.
