✦ Synopsis

A system of electrons confined in an inhomogeneous magnetic field in the presence of a nonuniform atmosphere of scattering particles is described at any instant by the distribution function appropriate to the situation in which no atmosphere is present. A generalization of the Fokker-Hawk equation is then derived for the evolution in time of the distribution function through t.hese rluasi-equilibrium distributions. An approximate solution of this equ:ltion is given for the case of electrons t,rapped in the earth's magnetic field. This solution yields the distribution of tho electrons in energy and angle as :t function of time. * Research wlpported in part by the (Miw of S:rv:tl ltesrarch under caont r:~ct P'orn li97 (00).

Electron orbits having a definite angular momentum in a static magnetic field are calculated with the aid of the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rules. The quantization gives that orbits are arranged along a straight line but the distance between the centers of two neighboring orbits decreases with inc
