β¦ Synopsis
A total of thirty tttxa of benthic macroinvertebrates were collected from Lake Nixini Tal ( m i l = 48 ha, mean depth= 16.2 m) situated 1937 m above sea-level in the Kumaun Rcgion of thc Himalayit. Of these, Chiranomus plumosus and Tubifex tubifex were namerically dominant, whilr Vivipnrus benyalensis (Mollusca.) was the most abundant species in terms of biomass. The SPASOnality was characterised by two peaks (May and December) both in density arid biomass. The population density iis well as biomass declined with progressive water depth up t o 7 m. Beyond 7 m water depth not even single individual was found.
Field work was p~rlormed from October 1977 to September 1978. Samplings were taken fortnightly from 7 stations a t depths of 1, 3, 5 , 7 , 9, 12 and 18 m (Fig. 1). Samples from shore areas were collected by scoop-type bottom sampler whcreas an Ekman dredge was used to collect the
