✦ Synopsis
The application of engineering principles to medical and biological systems requires crossdisciplinary knowledge and expertise. Systems science and crontrol engineering, with their emphasis on mathematical modelling, system structure and feedback regulation are well suited to such biomedical studies. The book contains contributions from workers active in this field, showing the application of mathematical analysis, modelling and control of biology. Some of the material contains research which has immediate clinical possibilities, such as artificial-limb prothesis, lung-parameter instrumentation and glucose regulation behaviour. Other chapters contain investigations which seek to understand the function of the body mechanisms in terms of their structure and dynamics. This category includes contributions on digestive-tract electrical, behaviour, eye-and-ear control systems, heart-beat arythmia and circadianrhythm modelling. Other contributions are concerned with oscillations at cellular level and the modelling of psychological phenomena.
Although the range of applications is large and the 'size' of the system boundaries very different, the contributions are linked by the threads of dynamical systems analysis and identification, oscillations in feedback systems and the inevitability of nonlinearity in life-science dynamic systems.
