✦ Synopsis

Expert or knowledge-based system approaches are currently being viewed with great interest for their potential to handle the many difficult problems encountered in image understanding and cartographic feature extraction from remotely sensed imagery. This article presents an overview of the many types of knowledge that must be modeled in remote sensing and cartography, and discusses architectural and control aspects deemed important for cartographic expert systems. A distributed architecture and a control structure based on a parallel non-directional search algorithm are described and open problems are mentioned.
