Abstract
During turning of cylindrical workpieces with different diameters the industry often uses standard clamping systems. These systems are economic and able to clamp different diameters. Their benefit is that valuable time for jaw changing may be saved. Therefore a special interest lies in studies which allow the minimization of distortion by using these universal clamping systems. In this study a method is presented using threeโjawโchucks to minimize the wallthicknessโdeviation of bearing rings caused by the turning process. The experimental approach considers a specific clamping sequence in combination with a variation of the clamping pressure. Additionally the use of a formโlocking clamping system, which allows a clear decrease of the necessary clamping pressure, will be examined. As a major result an optimized specific clamping sequence is presented, using segment jaws which will minimize the distortion caused by a varying depth of cut on the outer side of bearing rings.
