✦ Synopsis

The relative stereochemistry of the two acyclic carbons separated by a single bond was determined from three-bond homo-and heteronuclear coupling constants. The analysis of data was based on a purely qualitative interpretation of the Karplus relationships. The methodology presented could resolve acyclic diastereoisomers if adequate sets of three-bond coupling constants can be measured.
