✦ Synopsis

The results of numerical investigations into features of the behavior of structural elements are presented and discussed for certain kinds of short pulse loading. Considering pulses of rectangular form applied to a circular plate, it is shown that there are ranges of the pulse pressure and duration such that very small changes of the parameters of the problem may lead to large changes of the permanent deflection. The same counter-intuitive result was obtained for shallow cylindrical shells loaded on the concave side. The case of a shallow spherical cap shows that a shallow shell can reach a final deflection in a direction opposite to the direction of the pulse, even in the case when the panel material is behaving elastically. These solutions are very sensitive to the changes of parameters of the problem within certain ranges of the parameters. In these cases, it may be impossible to predict the actual response of the structural element by solving the equations of motion, since the parameters defining the problem are always known only approximately.
