β¦ Synopsis
A study was made of the dissolution of carbon blacks by nitric acid and the yellow color produced. Channel blacks and smaller size furnace blacks dissolve after 3 hr boiling, while larger size furnace blacks and lampblack dissolve after 5 hr boiling. Thermal blacks and acetylene black are only partially attacked after 5 hr boiling. The absorptivity factors for the soluble carbon blacks are tabulated.
