โœฆ Synopsis

Reactions of CdI2, InI, GaCI3, SnC12, TIC14, CuC1 and CuI with rare-gas He(3S), Ar (3p2), Kr (3P2) and Xe (3P2) metastable species were studied in a flowing afterglow apparatus. In all cases (except with CuX), emission from the excited states of the metal atom was observed, and with He we also observed lines from excited states of Cd + and In + ions. We verified that for Cd, In, Ga and Sn, these excited levels are populated from a first-order process. Rate constants for the different exit channels of dissociative excitation or ionization were determined. As in our work with T1 halides, we observed that when the dissociative ionization channel becomes energetically open, the efficiency for production of excited states of the neutral metal atom decreases sharply.

A general method is presented for the production of excited metal atoms by the photodissociation of metal alkyl and metal carbonyl compounds using the ArF or KrF laser-The process occurs collisionlessly by the sequential absorption of UV photons. Only specific fme structure components (J levels) are
