Nitrofurantoin is frequently used clinically to treat urinary tract infections, but little is known of its renal metabolism. The side effects of nitrofurantoin therapy, pulmonary and hepatic toxicities, and polyneuropathies, are thought to be a consequence of its reductive metabolic activation (1 -5).
