β¦ Synopsis
The second edition of Disorders of the Auditory System reflects the combined efforts of renowned audiologists and otologists to provide the reader with both the audiologic and medical aspects of auditory dysfunction associated with disorders of the peripheral and central auditory system. This book includes numerous insightful case studies covering both classic and unique clinical presentations that will provide informative reading for students and professionals in the fields of audiology, otology, and neurology. The book also includes color images of video otoscopy.
New to the Second Edition
Coverage of additional auditory disorders, including meningitis, cytomegalovirus, enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome, and barotrauma
New case studies
Updated references and resources
Access to a PluralPlus companion website for instructors that includes PowerPoint lecture slides and the color images from the text
From the Foreword
βWriting a book on disorders of the auditory system is a daunting task. Few individuals have the depth and breadth of knowledge to accomplish it effectively. But the authors of this volume, Drs. Frank E. Musiek, Jennifer B. Shinn, Jane A. Baran, and Raleigh O. Jones, are among a very small number of teams truly able to meet the challenge. This team has dealt with the issues and problems surrounding the evaluation of auditory disorders for many years, has devised a number of the tools in current use for clinical evaluation, and has applied them successfully in a variety of settings. They have been in the trenches. This team also reflects a fine working relationship between audiology, otology, and neurology critical to understanding the complex issues related to auditory disorders. β¦In this new edition, they bring us very nicely up to date on the present status of what has become, over the last five decades, a broad array of auditory disorders. This second edition especially emphasizes more case studies, coverage of additional disorders, and some very sophisticated new illustrations. In addition, the all-important reference list has been updated. I continue to recommend this book, especially this new second edition, as an excellent text for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course on auditory disorders and their evaluation.β

Reviews
"This book covers a wide range of auditory-related disorders that are primarily aimed at providing information to students but also other healthcare professionals in related fields. The comprehensive information of many auditory disorders is supported with case studies and pictures to help the reader fully understand and appreciate the information provided.
Learning objectives and overviews of each chapter are summarised at the beginning of the book to help the reader appreciate what each chapter will cover and why this is of value to the reader. This is particularly helpful for students who require a brief introduction to a topic and gives them the freedom to explore specific disorders in detail if they desire.
Before delving into the disorders of the auditory system, the authors cover the anatomy and structure of the auditory system, which provides enough depth for students and helps the reader understand the complex auditory disorders mentioned further along the book. Although not all auditory disorders are featured in this book, the authors attempt to include the most common/significant disorders that are relevant and still provide value to the reader. [...]
This book provides great detail of auditory system disorders that are relevant to student audiologists and other healthcare professionals in training. This book can also be applied to other healthcare disciplines that are interested in auditory-related disorders, as it provides an insight into auditory disorders from perspectives of various other disciplines.
This book is recommended for student audiologists and those interested in learning further about auditory disorders."

βDisorders of the Auditory System β Second Edition, published by Plural Publishing, provides an extensive amount of information on the audiological and medical aspects of auditory dysfunction associated with disorder of the central and peripheral auditory system in the fields of audiology, otology, and neurology.
The first chapters deal with the structure and function of the auditory and vestibular system and with audiological, vestibular system and with audiological, vestibular and radiological procedures; text is accompanied by figures which facilitate understanding and make the chapter extremely didactic.
The following sections cover outer, middle ear and inner ear disorders and subsequently auditory nerve and central auditory nervous system disorders.
For each disease in addition to a careful description of symptoms, incidence and prevalence, aetiology, audiological and medical management, clinical case reports are described.
The case descriptions are fairly well presented and diagnosis and treatment options are clearly discussed.
A striking characteristic of the book is the multidisciplinary approach used to address the issue of auditory disorders, such as explicitly written in the introduction ββ¦other disciplines such as neurology, pathology, and hearing science also have made important contributions to this area of study. One of the goals in writing this book was to include insights into auditory disorders from the perspectives of these various disciplines.β
Overall, this is a well-organized and comprehensive book, suitable for students, audiologists, otolaryngologist and other professionals in related fields.β
