THE AUTHORS suggest that their solution for the stress intensity factor. K,. associated with a radial crack in a circular ring under uniform external tension was also intended to provide data for internally pressurized cylinders. While it may appear obvious that the K, of a given cylinder or ring loaded by external tension is the same as that produced by internal pressure. some sort of verification is desirable. particularly a demonstration that the effects of pressure in the notch are included in their solution as applied to pressurized cylinders. As experimental evidence relating to this question. Bowie and Freese's results are compared with an experimental h', calibration[ I] from an internally pressurized cylinder with a pressurized notch. as described below.
