On the thermal etching of silicon iron*

The formation of striations or steps and of boundary grooves at metal surfaces are two effects of thermal etching that occur when metals are heated to relatively high temperatures.

This letter presents some observations on the thermal etching of silicon iron.

Polycrystalline sheet specimens, 0.012 in. thick of high purity silicon iron, containing about 3% silicon,
