✦ Synopsis

Trre AUTHOR should be congratulated for making an attempt to solve a very interesting problem. However, it is unfortunate that the results obtained in that paper are erroneous and misleading. The purpose of this discussion is to point out some of the mistakes committed by the author.

By going through the analysis presented in the paper, one would find that the stress and displa~ment fields in the strip that contains the crack and the half space above the strip are uniquely determined once eq. (2.34) is solved for #". But the author failed to realize (even though the parameters are explicitly written in the kernel of the integral equation) that this equation is independent of y, and vr, which are the elastic constants of the half space below the strip. In other words, the stresses and displacements in the strip do not depend on what is below the strip. Since the "lower" and "upper" directions are assigned arbitrarily, it is only logical to say that if the solution does not depend on & and v2, it should not depend on p, and Y, either. This is obviously incorrect.

The error started at the very beginning of the paper. The boundary conditions stated by eqs (1.2)-(1.3) are incorrect and they should be changed to El&, o+) -U&(X, o-) = 0, Ixl>n

THE STRESS intensity factors associated with a central crack, situated along the material interface between two different elastic media and subjected to the action of opening mode loads, have been determined in the present paper. Unlike previous results (refs [l, 8, 91 cited in the paper), Ku was fo
