What are your feelings about the work undertaken by Jo Vague in 1947, concerning abdominal obesity? Lefe `bvre: We have to give credit to Professor Jo Vague. He was the first to differentiate between what he termed "android obesity" and "gynoid obesity". Today we use the terms abdominal obesity and lower body obesity. Abdominal obesity is the form associated with diabetes, so it is important to recognize Professor Jo Vague's contribution in this area.

Should we be more involved in the prevention of Type 2 diabetes? Lefe `bvre: Yes, we have to try and prevent this disease by changing food habits and promoting physical activity. However, when we try and do this with adults, it is often too late. Action should be primarily directed at young people. Every effort should be made to teach good nutritional habits at school, starting at a very early age.

We have just concluded an enquiry involving Type 2 patients, to find out how many of them have discussed their diabetes with their family, particularly their children. We think it is important for people with diabetes to talk to their relatives.
