✦ Synopsis

The authors are to be congratulated on an extremely interesting paper in which they unravel some of the mysteries of the biaxial Griffith cracking geometry and report experiments which support the theory that, depending on the value of Poisson's ratio, the critical fracture stress may be increased or decreased by the presence of loads parallel to the crack° It is also illuminating to read the explanation for Griffith's 1924 (erroneous) revision of his original 1921 expression for the strain energy release rate and the critique of the calculations by other workers which subsequently have reproduced the revised Griffith expression.
