This paper reviews the use of established contact mechanics as a means of modelling particle wall interactions particularly wall friction. The contact mechanical solutions adopted are first order and when these are combined with simple models of the particle-wall morphology they provide a means of predicting the wall traction and its variation with the average normal stress. These models are applied to the results obtained from three particle-wall studies and are shown to provide a reasonable account of the data.
