✦ Synopsis

In March 2007, Professor Yutaka Tsuji retired from Osaka University. It was suggested by Martin Rhodes (Monash) that it might be appropriate to publish a special issue in recognition of Professor Tsuji's research contributions. Consequently, a number of researchers were invited to submit papers in the context of DEM simulations of fluidised beds. Professor Tsuji's research activities were much wider than this but, in the context of Powder Technology, his most significant impact was the combination of the Eulerian modelling of the fluid with the Lagrangean modelling of the particulate phase. This combined DEM/CFD approach to simulating at the micro-/meso-scale the behaviour of fluidised beds was outlined in the seminal paper by Tsuji Y., Kawaguchi T. and Tanaka T. (1993). Discrete particle simulation of two-dimensional fluidised bed. Powder Technology 110, 158-168.
