Lasers Roy Szweda Diode lasers represent one of the twin pillars of the compounds industry. Commercially or technically, the field never lets up in terms of innovation. This article reviews progress in the field emphasising two of the most promising areas, those of VCSELs and of high power diode lasers. Each has to prove that it can compete in terms of performance and cost in well-established markets, as well as forging new ones.
