The intermediates of this reaction should be 1.4-dihydroxy-8cyanoheptafulvenes, (3u) and (3b), which probably isomerize to each other through the tropone structures, (3c) or (3d). particularly under basic conditions. The compound ( 4 ) can be formed by intramolecular cyclization of ( 3 ~) .
