A single-step optoelectronics symbolic substitution scheme to handle parallel modified signed-digit (MSD) arithmetic operations is proposed. Conversion algorithms from MSD numbers into a canonical MSD representation are provided. The canonical MSD numbers have the property that no two consecutive di
