Accurate measurement of the transaortic gradient is important in the invasive assessment of the significance of aortic stenosis. The mean gradient obtained from simultaneous left ventricular and aortic pressure recordings is the gold standard, but requires two central catheters. We hypothesized that

β¦ Synopsis
The volume of the left ventricle of the heart can be calculated from measurements taken from tine angiocardiograms. During normal systole, blood leaves the left ventricle via the aortic vaIve; therefore, the first derivative of left ventricular volume with respect to time (during systole) is equal to aortic valve blood flow. Since a curve of left ventricular volume versus time contains significant scatter, it must be filtered, or smoothed, prior to differentiation.
This paper describes three methods of digitally filtering left ventricular volume, and discusses methods of calculating aortic valve blood flow. All three methods of smoothing volume give similar results.

To investigate the relationship between age-related blood flow velocity and heart rate in the left ventricular inflow tract, we studied 118 healthy volunteers (age > 15 years). The maximal velocity (Vmax) of the transmitral diastolic flow during FIGURE 1. Illustration of a cross section of the left
