✦ Synopsis
Overall, the text represents a stimulating and detailed contribution to the literature in the area of modelling, sensitivity and optimal control. Many other areas could benefit greatly from a detailed study of philosophies and methodologies described. In its detailed technical content, the degree of generality used and the emphasis on optimization will not be to everybody's liking but, setting this to one side, it will be a useful addition to the bookshelf of any active research worker in the field.
About the reviewer
Professor Owens was born in England in 1948. He received the degree of B.Sc. and an ARCS diploma in physics from London University in 1969 and a Ph.D. degree in control theory and nuclear reactor control in 1973. From 1969 to 1973 he was with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, AEEW, and joined the Department of Control Engineering at the University of Sheffield in 1973. Since January 1985, he has been a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. His research interests lie in the general areas of multivariahle and optimal control, modelling and approximation theory, in CAD of control systems and asymptotic analysis in control systems analysis. He is the author or co-author of numerous publications in these areas.
