✦ Synopsis

The propagation and scattering of ultrasound in concrete is discussed. The heterogeneous composition of concrete causes the ultrasound to scatter considerably. In the limit of many scattering events, the ultrasonic energy density in circular cylinders of concrete is shown to evolve in accordance with a one-dimensional diusion equation. The ultrasonic diusivity and dissipation are measured experimentally over the frequency range of 100Β±900 kHz. Theoretical descriptions of the diusivity are in accord with the experimental values. Such frequencies are well above typical frequencies used for concrete inspection. Thus, it is anticipated that the use of these higher frequencies will result in new techniques for characterizing material properties and damage in concrete structures.

This research deals with a non-destructive method for characterizing the degraded cover of concrete structures using high-frequency ultrasound (0.5-1 MHz). Although such a frequency range is unusual in civil engineering, it is well suited to the kind of defect to be detected, as it corresponds to a

In the present paper, an analysis of the diffusion behavior of chloride ions in concrete is presented. In concentrated electrolytic aqueous solutions such as seawater or that typically used in laboratory experiments, the effect of ionic interaction may significantly reduce the chemical potential and
