โœฆ Synopsis

Diffusion of Ru, Fe 8nd Co in liquid silver is measured in the temper8ture range 975-1400ยฐC by use of the clapillary-reservoir technique. The experiment81 results on the relative solute diffusivity and its temperature dependence 8re discussed in terms of the fluctuation and the "hole" theories of liquid diffusion, 8ssuming the solute 8s 8 point charge equal to the difference in the valances of the solute 8nd solvent atoms. Both the Thomas-Fermi and the self-consistent Hartree potentiels are used to evaluate t,he addition81 coulombic inters&ion term due to the excess solute charge. The theoretical and experimental results agree with both the fluctuation end 'hole' models of liquid diffusion, if Ru, Fe and Co diffuse in liquid silver with relative valences -2, -1.3 8nd -0.15, respectively, instead of -3, -3 8nd -2 as suggested by the Periodic Table of Elements.
