β¦ Synopsis
We report new measurements ofEPR spin relaxation times TV and T2 for H atoms in hexagonal ice at -6 "C. We find T, = 23 f 3 ps, and T2= 6.9 k I .O ps at this temperature, in good agreement with expectation based on previous experiments. Motional correlation times have been calculated from these values and from previous T2 measurements for H and D atoms in isotopically mixed ice. The hopping rate deduced -2.8 x lOlo s-' near the crystal melting point, implies a diffusion rate of H atoms in ice nearly as fast as occurs in liquid water.

Cooperative polarisation in ice I h is illustrated in clusters of eight molecules using local density functional calculations where the exchange-correlation functional is a modified Ceperley-Alder expression. These parameter-free total energy calculations support the four-point charge/polarisable po
