✦ Synopsis

We study the dynamics of a system of particles di using in a uctuating medium: a lattice which can be in two states, with transitions among them induced by a combination of a periodic deterministic and a stochastic process. We characterize the problem studying the mean ΓΏrst passage time (MFPT), the probability of return to the origin (Ps 0 ), and the number of visited lattice sites. We observe a double resonant activation-like phenomenon when we plot the MFPT and Ps 0 as functions of the intensity of the transition rate stochastic component.

The forces in packed granular materials are distributed very differently than those in "normal" solids. Forces much larger than the mean occur, but are exponentially rare. These force inhomogeneities can be understood using an exactly solvable statistical model, in which the fluctuations in the forc
