The sealing gasket matches the curvature of the inside of the barrel casing. An O-ring seals against the inner surface of the barrel casing and the sealing gasket fits within a port formed in the outside of the head. The end of the casing is chamfered, allowing the head and sealing gasket to slide into the barrel, without causing damage to the O-ring.
This design offers several advantages. The coupling guard, 94, can be larger in diameter, eliminating windage problems, and a number of lines can be connected through the casing, reducing maintenance time and expense. There is also reduced drilling, welding and heat treatment inside the heads, and no threaded ends or plugs need to be installed. As instrumentation can pass through the casing, there is no need for adaptors or end covers to guard the wires.
