✦ Synopsis

Larval anuran tail integument is known to present marked differences in histolytic and regenerative phenomena when various regions of the tail are compared. Thus, Clausen ('30) found that integument from the anterior region of the tail, when transplanted autoplastically to the back, histolyzes during metamorphosis before that from more posterior regions. He also found ('32) that partially histolyzed integumentary grafts from four different levels of the antero-posterior axis of the tail, when transplanted homeoplastically to the backs of non-metamorphosing larvae, exhibit an antero-posterior gradient of regeneration. The writer ( '34), in a similar manner, has been able to show that integumentary grafts from different dorso-ventral levels of the tail do not histolyze simultaneously but in the definite sequence median-ventraldorsal. This sequence was shown to be due, primarily, to a difference in the time of histolytic incipience rather than to different histolytic rates in the three grafts. I n the same paper it was reported that partially histolyzed median tailskin grafts are completely regenerated before either ventral or dorsal integumentary transplants, and that regeneration in the two latter regional transplants is completed in the order ventral-dorsal. The nature of this regenerative sequence was not definitely stated, but the suggestion was made that it I This paper, together with part I of thia series of studies, waa aubmitted to the Graduate School of New York University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy,
