✦ Synopsis

Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) using a thin-layer flow-through electrochemical interface was used for simultaneous on-line studies of the dependence of mass spectra and Faradaic current on the electrode potential during electrocatalytic reduction of copper ions by formaldehyde. The feasibility of the thin-layer flow-through DEMS cell for investigating electrode processes involving metal phase formation was demonstrated. The method permits to obtain the instantaneous values of partial reactions of the catalytic process.

A three electrode thin-layer, ¯ow-by electrode cell was coupled on-line with electrospray-mass spectrometry (i.e., ECaES-MS) for the study of biological redox reactions. The cell made use of a commercially available 6.0 mm diameter, offset glassy carbon disk working electrode, a AgaAgCl reference el
