✦ Synopsis

From this issue forward, we will be dividing our letters section into two parts ± research letters and correspondence. This is in response to the increasing number of articles we are receiving which contain original and interesting research work but for reasons of the preliminary nature of the investigation and/or the need for replication, are not appropriate to accept as full papers. These will be headed ``Research Letters'' and we hope to publish these quickly after their acceptance. Research letters will not contain research which is of a lesser scienti®c quality of that in our full publications. They will undergo a predominantly internal review process with external advice where necessary. This is the mechanism whereby we aim to speed up publication but maintain our scienti®c standard.
