✦ Synopsis

A new method for enhancing the 2:1 VSWR impedance bandwidth of microstrip antennas is presented. Bandwidth enhancement is achie¨ed by loading the microstrip antenna by a ceramic microwa¨e ( ) dielectric resonator DR . The ¨alidity of this technique has been established using rectangular and circular radiating geometries. This method impro¨es the bandwidth of a rectangular microstrip antenna to more ( than 10% f 5 times that of a con¨entional rectangular microstrip ) antenna with an enhanced gain of 1 dB.

The stacked structure of an aperture-coupled cylindrical ( ) dielectric resonator DR antenna is studied experimentally. The effects of the offset and the air gap between the dri¨en and parasitic DR elements are in¨estigated. It is found that the bandwidth of the stacked structure can increase from t
