Ix RECENT

work on the dielectric constant of a BlLRl'OL RESEARCH FOUNDATIOlV number of dipole vapors, anomalous increases Communication R"* se in the dielectric constant were found as the liquefaction point was appr0ached.l A similar increase was found by the writer for bromine vapor in equilibrium with its liquid phase at 23.4" C.2 Jona and the writer attributed these results to the association of the molecules, while C. T. Zahn has regarded them as due to the formation of an absorbed layer of the liquid on the condenser plates used to measure the dielectric constant.

With regard to the association of the molecules, this combination may be due either to the natural tendency of the molecules to condense or to the action of the electric field to form molecular aggregates.

In order to investigate more fully these various possibilities a further study of these anomalies has been undertaken by the writer.
