Abstract
Concerted electrocyclic processes which are forbidden according to the symmetry conservation rules of Woodward & Hoffmann, may nevertheless take place at low activation energies. The necessary conditions are exemplified by the unique case of the trans‐15, 16‐dimethyl‐dihydropyrene ⇌ 15, 16‐dimethyl‐[2.2]metacyclophane‐4,9‐diene system.
