In flutes, a resonance pipe and a jet edge system work together to produce a note, and the phase relations between the vibrations at the exit of the jet of air in front of the lips and those at the edge blown against are very important. The physical processes taking place when a note is produced and the technical possibilities open to a flute player to influence the sound are discussed.
