Summary, 31 fractures have been observed upon 120 children with spina bifida cystica. The poor clinical picturc with painless swelling, and local warming is frequently responsible for late diagnosis. Commonly trauma is inadeqnate and breaks a demineralized bone. The predispostion of juxta-articular portions is due to a lerer mechanism. Fractures after plaster fixation for hip-operations are not uncommon. Rapid bony consolidation is generally assisted by luxurious callus. New fractures are prevented by early standing and walking in calipers. Fractures in spina bifida are compared with those in poliomyelitis, cerebral palsy and traumarie paraplegia.
