The Parainfluenza-Virus In/ection in the Very Young In/ant Virological, Serological and Clinical Studies Summary. On all infants with respiratory tract infection admitted to the Univ.-Children's Hospital, virological and serological studies were done. By these studies it was demonstrated that in 45 cases the parainfluenza viruses were the etiological agents, i. e. about 300/0 of all respiratory tract infections.
By comparison with the clinical symptoms it is impossible to differentiate between the different agents e~using respiratory tract infections. Many different agents may affect a child in a common way. Furthermore the same agent may reinfeet the child, but depending on the antibody status cause a more or less severe illness. There are antigenic relations betweens the different parainfluenza strains that induce a socalled "broadening of antibedies".
