✦ Synopsis

Halobacteria swim by clockwise and counterclockwise rotation of their right-handed flagellar bundles consisting of helical filaments that are composed of glycoprotein subunits. Motion occurs by smooth swimming interrupted by spontaneous motor switching events. Sensing of light and chemical stimuli and response of the flagellar motor allows the cells to orientate themselves in their natural environment. Light perception by retinal proteins is a photocatalytic process and several properties of the stimulus-processing system of the cells are discussed.
