✦ Synopsis
Follow-up examinations of 196 conservatively and operatively treated fractures of the tibial plateau have shown, that already after 5 years in more than 50% of the injured knee-joints marked arthrosis was present. Of importance for development of arthrosis was the patients age, the type of fracture, the length of immobilisation of the knee-joint and the method of treatment. The best results have been achieved, if the knee was not immobilized for more than 4 weeks. Almost twice as much artt~'otic changes were found in patients aged more than 40 years compared to young. The type of fracture seems to have no real influence on development of arthrosis. Our findings moreover showed, that even surgical treatment of these fractures could not prevent arthrosis in all instances. The etiopathogenetic factors of the posttraumatic arthrosis are discussed. It is believed that mechanical reasons, nutritional disturbances of the joint cartilage, changes of the joint capsule and enzymatic reactions play a main role.
