✦ Synopsis
-
Dogs, lightly anesthetized with Pernocton, were exposed to low environmental temperatures, or their core temperature was lowered by means of a thermode placed into the oesophagus. When shivering and an increase in oxygen consumption had been evoked, the temperature of the vertebral canal was changed by means of ~ thermode placed into the peridural space. Shivering was increased by cooling, and was decreased by warming the vertebral canal.
-
The additional increase in oxygen consumption produced by cooling the vertebral canal under the conditions of a low environmental temperature or a low core temperature was greater than the increase in oxygen consumption produced by cooling the vertebral eanal under the conditions of elevated skin and core temperatures (4,3 ml. min -1. kg -1 and 2,9 ml. min 2. kg-~ instead of 1,1 ml. min -1 • kg-l).
-
The decrease in oxygen cõnsumption caused by warming the vertebral cana] was 2,6 tal" min-*, kg-* in dogs exposed to low ambient temperatures, and 1,8 ml • min -1 • kg -1 in animals with ]ow core temperatures.
-
The results show that heat production can be influenced by cooling as weil as by warming the thermosensitive structures located in the vertebral canal.
