✦ Synopsis
For glass and ceramics a safety factor analogous to that for ductile materials is being discussed. Defining this safety factor the subcritical crack growth was neglected. Therefore the discussed safety factor cannot be used without restrictions. The factor can be used for all glasses and ceramics when a short-time load is applied, and for a few important engineering ceramics even when a long-time load is applied.
